This book belonged to James and Catherine McGinness (both names are in the book). James McGinness (1842-1905) came to the Framlingham area in the 1870s and married Catherine Taafe in 1880. Members of the McGinness families had been involved in hotelkeeping in the Purnim district. James and Catherine McGinness had a farm at Framlingham (including the breeding of horses) with the property known as Riverview. The farm and derelict remnants of the house still exist today. The youngest son of James and Catherine was Paul McGinness, a hero of two World Wars and the founder of the airline Qantas. The original spelling of the surname was ‘McGuinness’ but James altered the spelling to avoid confusion over names with his brother John. This book is of interest because it belonged to the McGinness family of Riverview, Framlingham. Several of the names in the book are marked, especially those of ‘McGuinness’ showing that perhaps the McGinness family of Framlingham had expectations of claiming some of the money listed as unclaimed. This is a hard cover book of 472 pages. At the back of the book are several pages giving addresses of lawyers and opinions of the Press. The cover is red with an embedded pattern on the front cover and gold lettering on the front cover and the spine. The inscriptions are handwritten in blue and black ink. The book contains names of those deceased persons and/or their heirs who have appeared in advertisements regarding unclaimed money. This book belonged to Pearl McCullagh whose address is given as Oak Grove (the name of the property) inYangery with the name of Illowa S. School under the address. Because of the content of the book it is presumed that the ‘S’ stands for Sabbath or Sunday and the Sunday School may have been a Presbyterian one. Yangery is situated between Woodford and Koroit and Illowa, nearby, is about 8 kilometres from Koroit and about 9 kilometres from Warrnambool. Pearl McCullagh was the daughter of Samuel James and Charlotte Jane McCullagh. She was born in 1906 and married Ernest Keen. This book is of interest because it belonged to an early 20th century resident, Pearl McCullagh who lived at Oak Grove in Yangery. This is a soft cover book of 104 pages. This medal has been issued to commemorate the Coronation of King George VI of England in 1937. It was issued by a department store in Warrnambool, that of Cramond and Dickson. This business was established by John Glass Cramond and James Dickson in Timor Street, Warrnambool in 1855. It moved to Liebig Street at the corner of Timor Street and sold mens and ladies wear. It had its own tailors and milliners and the building was a landmark one in Warrnambool for over 100 years. It closed in 1973. In 1937 the business of Cramond and Dickson was 82 years old. This medal is of great interest as it shows the level of fervor for British Royalty and all things British that was prevalent in Warrnambool in the 1930s. The Cramond and Dickson business was one of the most important ones in Warrnambool’s history as it operated for over 100 years. This is a silver-coloured medal commemorating the Coronation of King George VI of England. One side has the heads of King George and Queen Elizabeth surrounded by wording and the other side has the name of the Warrnambool store issuing the medal. The medal is tarnished. This is a high-quality item and would have been used in a household in affluent circumstances. The firm of James Dixon and Sons of Sheffield, England, was established in 1806 and ceased to operate in 1992. Candles were widely used for household lighting until the advent and availability of electric lighting from the 1920s onwards. This item has no known local provenance but is retained because it is fine example of a household item of the past.This is an electro-plated silver candlestick holder. The base is roughly circular (more hexagonal) with an embossed edge and a handle attached by welding. The candlestick holder is vase-shaped with a circular open top for inserting the candle. The circular top also has an embossed edge. Attached to the handle by a clip is a cone-shaped snuffer. The candle holder and snuffer have been used. These little tins were available for soldiers to buy before embarking to the first world war. As the candles and matches are contained within the tin , it would have been a ideal way to keep both dry. The lid of the tin could also have been useful as a windshield. The tin was donated in memory of Les Lawlor. James Leslie Lawlor was born in Mepunga and lived in Warrnambool and enlisted in October 1916. He was discharged as medically unfit as he had broken his wrist three years previously and the break had failed to heal well. The tin was donated in his memory by his sister Vera Maguire This item with its link to World War 1 soldiers has historical significance to Australians in general but is also a link to a local family. This 1901 history of the Boer War is written from the British perspective and the writing is so emotionally-charged that it reads like a story from a Boys Only Annual. The owner was James Fidler, presumably the eldest son of Thomas and Fanny Fidler who arrived in Melbourne in 1849. They lived on a property called Grange in Panmure with the homestead called Maida Hill. Thomas Fidler owned butchers’ shops in Warrnambool and Panmure. James Fidler was born in 1850 and died in 1929. This book is of interest because it was owned by James Fidler whose family was a prominent one in Warrnambool and Panmure in the 19th century. The book is also useful for researching the Boer War, a conflict in which many Warrnambool and district men took an active part. This is a hard cover book of 1554 pages. There are several pages at the end listing other books published by Cassell and Company. There are 127 chapters and an index. There are many black and white illustrations and several full-page colour plates. This bottle was used in the pharmacy of James Barnes in Minyip and Horsham and possibly also in Warrnambool as the bottle was found in this city. Born in England, James Barnes came to Australia in 1873. He was a chemist and veterinary surgeon in Creswick, Minyip and Horsham before coming to Warrnambool about 1926. He purchased the pharmacy of Dougall and Easton at 102 Liebig Street which had been leased to Leonard Eason in the early 1920s. Barnes called this business the Manuka Pharmacy. The chemist he brought in to manage the business, Len Suggett, eventually bought the business. Barnes died in 1939. His son Ralph also had a pharmacy business in Warrnambool in the 1920s. Although this bottle does not have the name ‘Warrnambool’ on it, it is likely that James Barnes used the bottle in his Warrnambool pharmacy. It is, therefore, of considerable interest as it is one of the few pieces of James Barnes’ mementoes found so far. James and Ralph Barnes were prominent chemists in Warrnambool in the 20th century. This is a glass bottle with a rectangular body with curved edges, a circular-shaped neck and a round moulded top. There is no stopper and the top has a small chip in the glass. The front of the bottle is embossed with the name of the chemist and the outline of a shield with the chemist’s initials. This coat hanger has been used in the Warrnambool department store of Cramond and Dickson. John Glass Cramond and James Dickson established a shop in Warrnambool in 1855 in Timor Street and moved to Liebig Street a few years later. New premises were erected in 1878 and the department store selling mens and ladies wear on the corner of Liebig and Timor Streets was a landmark building in Warrnambool until the business closed in 1973. Cramond and Dickson had their own tailors and milliners. This coat hanger is of interest as a memento of the store of Cramond and Dickson, a business that operated in Warrnambool for over 100 years. This is a wooden coat hanger in a curved shape with a part of the wood at one end missing. The centre of the hanger has a hole pierced through with a metal hook inserted for hanging on to a rod. The hook is somewhat rusted. Eliza Rutledge (1820-1888) was the daughter of Rupert and Jane (nee Newby) Kirk. She married William Rutledge in St James’ Church, Sydney on 18th August, 1840. She and William had five children two sons and five daughters. Recorded accounts tell that Eliza was “beloved for her kindness and hospitality” and that she and William kept open house for all manner of social events and occasions. Eliza died at Farnham Park, Dennington, on 31st August 1888. James Bostock, a grazier, was a member of the Bostock family, prominent Warrnambool pastoralists and businessmen who had come from Tasmania in the mid 1840s and settled in the Warrnambool area. The chemist shop of R.F. Kennedy was established in Warrnambool in 1880 and quickly became one of the leading businesses in the town. Kennedy was a wholesale, retail and manufacturing chemist in Timor Street (the building still exists) and a prominent community member and a Town Councillor. He died in 1903 but the business continued to use the name of R. F. Kennedy and Co. until 1924. This docket is of some interest as it contains the names of the R.F. Kennedy chemist shop and James Bostock , a prominent Warrnambool resident. This is a cream-coloured docket issued by R.F.Kennedy & Co. to James Bostock in 1908. The printing shows a variety of styles in blue and white and the page has blue printed lines. The famous Kennedy symbol of a lighthouse is printed prominently and the name of Kennedy is contained in an ornamental banner. The sales information is printed in blue type and there is a Kennedy stamp attached to the bottom of the docket and this is slightly overlapping the page. John Wilson Younger was the proprietor of J Younger & Co Warrnambool, which was a former branch of Melbourne Cash Stores. The Youngers store operated in Liebig St Warrnambool until the 1980’s as a department store James Younger died in 1939 and the store was operated by his son in law, Carlos Gordon for many years. John Younger was involved in many areas of social and community life in Warrnambool. In 1903 he lived at Riccalton 3 Darling St, Warrnambool. He was a director of the Warrnambool Woollen Mill and was Mayor around 1910 for two terms. This book was a present from James Dickson to John Glass Cramond in 1897. These two men were business partners and friends. They established the drapery, ironmongery and clothing business of Cramond and Dickson in Warrnambool in 1855 and this business remained as an important store in Warrnambool until 1973. John Cramond was Mayor of Warrnambool from 1876 to 1877 and from 1881 to 1882.This is a most significant item as it belonged to a prominent Warrnambool man and was given to him by another prominent Warrnambool citizen. The store of Cramond and Dickson was one of the best-known and most important shop in Warrnambool for nearly 120 years. This is a brown leather-bound book with a red lining on the inside cover. The book has 900 pages and was printed in 1893. The contents include an English Grammar, an English Dictionary, the population of European Capitals, a list of Cities and Towns in Britain, a list of Animal, Vegetable and Mineral productions, a list of Proverbs, a Law Dictionary, a Compendium of Modern History and the Coronets of Princes of the Blood and of the Peerage. This book mark was issued by Cramond & Dickson's store Warrnambool to honour Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897. The Cramond & Dickson's store was established by John Cramond and James Dickson in 1855 and closed in 1974. The first store was in Timor Street and later moved to the corner of Liebig Street and Timor Street in 1865 . They opened a branch store in Poultry Lane in London in the 1880s. Queen Victoria ruled from 1837 to 1901. This is an original Victorian Government document containing the printed version of 37 reports and letters regarding the building of the first Allansford bridge completed early in 1852. The correspondence dates from October 1850 to February 1852 and includes letters and reports from Melbourne Government employees such as Robert Hoddle, Chief Surveyor, David Lennox, Superintendent of Bridges and Lieutenant – Governor Charles La Trobe. The correspondence from local settlers included the names of William and John Allan, John Davidson and James Coulstock. The correspondence shows that some settlers in the Warrnambool/Port Fairy district wanted a portion of the Government allocated funds spent on the local roads and bridges in other locations. The 1852 Allansford bridge cost £480 and was replaced in 1870. This document has strong historical significance as it relates to one of the earliest State government works in the district and records the public imput into the decision.. Grassmere is a small hamlet about 12 kilometres from Warrnambool. It is a farming area. The Grassmere Gold Mining Company, presumably established by local people in Grassmere, was created in 1898 for the purpose of acquiring from Messrs James and Mewha a lease of a Cassilis gold mine (23 acres). £5000 was to be raised in shares of five shillings and one shilling each. The Manager of the Company was Horatio Dickson of Melbourne and the brokers were McMeekin and Co. of Melbourne and Warrnambool and Dickson and Osborne of Melbourne. This reef mine was one of several in Cassilis, Gippsland, 12 kilometres north west of Swifts Creek. The gold-bearing quartz reefs were discovered in 1885 and worked to 1914. It is not known whether the Grassmere Cassilis mine was a financial success but the mining operations were impeded by the hardness of the stone in the area. William Robinson was a farmer in the Grasmere district. This receipt is of considerable interest as one of only three items the Warrnambool and District Historical Society has that is connected to the Grassmere Gold Mining Company. The gold mine establishment was one of the minor events in the district in the 1890s. This is a buff-coloured 1899 receipt for William Robinson who has paid six shillings and threepence for part payment of his shares in the Grassmere Gold Mining Company. The receipt has black printing and black-ink handwriting. There is one stamp of the Manager ‘H.S. Dickson’ and another of ‘Grassmere Gold Mining Company No Liability’. There are two stamps – one is the stamp of ‘H.S.Dickson’ and the other is the stamp of the ‘Grassmere Gold Mining Company, No Liability’. This album contains photographs of a family, (the Horns of ‘Wildwood’, Warrnambool) and other photographs of Warrnambool – the foreshore, the Soldiers’ Memorial, the Breakwater, the Hopkins River, Liebig and Timor Streets etc. It has been made by a member of the Horn family and given as a Christmas present to other members of the family. Charles James Horn came to Australia in 1881and was a tutor to the Barber family of ‘Staywood Park’, Wangoom. He and his wife Emma then worked a property at Cudgee before settling in Warrnambool at ‘Wildwood’ in North Warrnambool. One of their sons, Charles Bernard Horn married Margaret Cairns in 1916 but died in 1927. Another son, Leslie, was killed in World War One. This little album is of great interest because it contains photographs of the Horn family and other photographs of views in Warrnambool. It is therefore of considerable historical interest and will be very useful to researchers. As it is a handmade item it is also of interest because it is an example of the sort of homemade items made as presents at a time (the late 1920s) when finances for something more expensive may not have been available. These are two items which are believed to be linked. One is an envelope marked ‘C.J. Horn, Wildwood, Warrnambool’ and the other is a blue-covered homemade album of photographs bound with red wool. The front cover has ‘Warrnambool’ written in red ink and the back of the front cover is stamped ‘Ralph Barnes, Chemist, Warrnambool’. There are 22 sepia-coloured photographs of a family (the Horns) and other views of Warrnambool. All have a label on the back. This item has come from funeral directors Beattie and Phillips who have operated as funeral directors in Warrnambool since 1865 when Christopher Beattie and Henry Phillips commenced their business. They operated as partners until Henry died in 1896. Christopher continued until his death in 1916 when the business passed to his son Christopher who operated the business until 1945 when it was transferred to James J Leahy. The business was next to the Wesleyan church in Koroit St. Early advertisements cite the latest in services, vehicles and horses. This cloth could have been used to drape over coffins or seats. The society also has recently acquired a top hat worn by these funeral directors. The new testament is the second part of the Bible and records the teachings of Christ through the four gospels as well as the Acts of the Apostles and letters of St Paul as well as book of Revelations. It is commonly used as a book of inspiration and study within all Christian Churches. This particular copy was presented to James Cook in 1940 by the Hamilton Church of Christ Sunday School. The Warrnambool permanent Building and Investment Society was established in May 1869. It relied on investors buying shares in the society, thereby providing the funds which were available to be borrowed to use in the building of houses. A considerable number of houses in Warrnambool would have been built using this scheme. The stated trustees in 1872 were Samuel Macgregor, C A Cramer, James Astley Bromfield, and the committee comprised of James Hider, W. W. Jamieson, James Coulstock, Archibald MacFarlane, Robert Newton, David Evans, NT C Stelling and W Jones. The bankers were the national Bank of Australasia. It had some difficulties in the 1870’s but was still operating well into the 1930’s where it again was not putting through the volume of business compatible with its resources and it had been found necessary to pay off a considerable number of fixed deposits and Investors’ shares. There is little mention of it after the mid 1930’s. This document provides details of an organization which operated in Warrnambool for over 60 years and proved beneficial to homebuilders and investors alike. It also has a number of well- known local names listed in their positions of operating the building society.Cream watermarked paper folded to four pages. This label accompanied a bottle of Dr Bright’s Phosphodyne. It was a form of medicine also known as ozonic oxygen which was developed and patented in 1869 by Dr Charles Bright, a 19th century Resident Surgeon at St Mary’s Hospital London, The medicine claimed to ease ‘indigestion, liver complaints, nervous debility, female complaints, premature decline, local weakness and spermatorrhea’. It was widely sold by chemists throughout Australia in the 19th century and in this case was supplied by the Warrnambool chemist, James Astley Bromfield. He was a significant person in Warrnambool’s history as he produced the 1856 map of the Warrnambool district showing all the original landholders, a seminal resource for historians today. Bromfield had a chemist shop in Warrnambool from 1854 to the late 1880s, initially in Timor Street and then in Liebig Street (number 80 and later number 78). Bromfield was very active in local community affairs. This label is of considerable interest as it shows the use in the 19th century of medicine that today would be labelled ‘quack’. It is of particular interest as it was supplied by James Astley Bromfield’s chemist shop and he is an important early identity in Warrnambool, involved in many activities in the town. He was a Justice of the Peace, a Trustee of the Savings Bank, Chairman of the Western Steam Navigation Company, a Director of the Gasworks and on the committees of the Harbour Committee, the Fire Brigade and the Anglers Protection Society. He was a Warrnambool Councillor (1858-60; 1865-1870) and a Shire Councillor (1875-1883). This is a sheet of paper that accompanied a bottle of Dr Brights’ Phosphodyne medicine. This business card advertised the business of Charles Hider who had a stationery and book shop in Liebig Street from the 1860s to the 1880s. (63 Liebig Street today). He also sold photographs and pictures, picture frames, pianos and other musical instruments and homeopathic medicines and was an agent for local newspapers and overseas magazines. The stamp on one side of the card shows Liebig Street spelled ‘Liebeg’, suggesting that the stamp was perhaps made in the 1860s when ‘Liebeg’ was the common spelling of the street name. Charles Hider’s brother James also had a book and stationery store in Warrnambool in Timor Street in the 19th century. This card is of considerable interest as it belonged to Charles Hider, a prominent businessman in Warrnambool in the 19th century.
