This music stand belonged to Eva Veronica Gaspar. Miss Gaspar (1913 -1978) was one of Warrnambool's most notable musicians and photographers. She gave free music lessons to Warrnambool and district children, organised choral festivals and ran a printing business. She was a life member of the Warrnambool Music Society and organized the Mozart Music Festival for many years. She was a Warrnambool Citizen of the Year 1956 and was awarded a British Empire Medal in 1972 for her services to music. She also conducted the Warrnambool Civic Orchestra, St. Joseph's church choir, junior choirs and recorder groups. In 1977 she held an exhibition at the Warrnambool Art Gallery of her photographs, drawings and monochromes. This music stand was used by Eva Gaspar mainly in Mozart Hall in Gilles Street. This stand is of interest as a memento of the work of Eva Gaspar an important musician in Warrnambool in the twentieth century.This is a wooden music stand with a circular base on four feet. The base has an outer ridge with a shallow indent and a domed top into which the pedestal is attached. The pedestal has decorative features . The ledge at the top is rectangular shaped with a projecting curved edge at the base. The top has a compartment for holding music and/or notes. The pedestal is attached to the top tray with a circular brace and metal screws. The whole item has been varnished but is stained and rubbed. This clock was over the door of the shop of Sambell’s pharmacy at 90 Fairy Street. John Sambell opened the Hall of Pharmacy in Fairy Street, Warrnambool about 1890. He was a chemist and dentist with previous experience in Great Britain and Victoria. His shop had been conducted by Edward Griffiths in the 1880s. By 1919 John Sambell’s son, Herbert, had joined the business, trading as Sambell and Son, though John Sambell had died in 1906. This shop was located at 151 Fairy Street. The Sambells then built new shops on the north eastern corner of Koroit and Fairy Streets and occupied the corner position. In the late 1930s the Sambell business moved to 90 Fairy Street and the business was known as Sambell, Son and Granddaughter. Herbert Sambell died in 1943. This Sambell clock had previously been at the shops of Brocks and Mainlands, both jewellers. This clock is of considerable importance as it was connected to the pharmacy business of the Sambell family, a business that was prominent in Warrnambool for many years. It is an example of the 19th and early 20th centuries practice of placing a large clock outside a business. This is a large oval clock with a gilded wooden frame and a metal face. The hour and second hands and the Roman figures are made of metal. The clock is designed to be placed on a wall or frame of some sort and to be used outside on a shop or other commercial building. This printers block was made for the Warrnambool and District Historical Society and used to print letterheads, envelopes and cards. The impression on the block is of the sketch map drawn by Thomas Price of Port Fairy of the Warrnambool Harbour site when he wrote to Superintendent Charles LaTrobe in 1844 regarding the suitability of the site for a new town. The letter is regarded as an important impetus for La Trobe to consider establishing the town of Warrnambool and so the sketch was used by the Historical Society as its logo on letterheads etc for many years. It was also used as the heading for the Society newsletters from the late 1980s to late 2007.This block of the Thomas Price sketch was used by the Historical Society for many years for its printed material and the sketch was used as its logo for about 20 years so it is an important part of the Society’s history and the block is kept as a reminder of this.This is a printing block with an impression made of metal and attached to a wooden block. The wood is in layers of dark and light coloured wood and has a piece cut out at the top left hand corner. These items have no known provenance and no information has been found on the Barnards on the printing blocks, delivery paper and stamps. The stamp for ‘W.I.O. Barnard’ was sent to an address in Camberwell so it is presumed that the Barnard family members were in Melbourne and not in the Warrnambool district.The only interest in these items is in the printing blocks and stamps. They are good examples of the type of printing used in the early 20th century and the type of stamp used by individuals for letterheads, visiting cards, personal items etc. There are 5 objects in this collection:- 1. A courting chain was carved by a man and given to the girl he was courting. This was a common European practice in the past, with Welsh courting chains surviving from the 17th century, though the practice may have gone back even further than that. The chain indicated that man was a capable artisan and was occupying his hands in a healthy way, particularly when the lady was present. The many types of loops and chains carved all had symbolic meanings. The cage with the wooden balls inside was said to indicate the desire of the man for children and the number he would like. The symbolism of the arm and hand with the two digits touching is not known. This courting chain has no known local provenance but it is an interesting object as an example of the customs of the past. It will be useful for displays. This is a wooden carved courting chain. One end is in the shape of an arm and hand with the thumb and first finger touching at the tips. Then there are three chains linked to the arm with a peg inserted into another loop at the end. Next, joined to this, is another loop attached to a wooden cage which has two wooden balls inside. Slate has been used for hundreds of years as a base for writing and many young students began their schooling using one to practise their writing. They had many advantages among them the fact that they were reusable and errors could be erased and corrected. A small duster or cloth was often attached for cleaning.This slate belonged to Olive Ardlie who was the daughter of Arthur Stanley Ardlie and Ethel Mary Lisburne (nee Ryan). They lived at "Aroona" 19 Princess St Warrnambool and Arthur worked as an accountant in his father's law firm. Olive was their eldest child and she died in 1912 at the age of 6. She was the granddaughter of William Ardlie one of Warrnambool's earliest residents and one of the state's longest serving solicitors . Olive had two sisters one of whom donated this slate. This cartridge re-loader is most likely for loading 12 gauge shotgun shells. It is not known if it was for private or military use. This cartridge re-loader has been in the collection of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society for many years but it has no known local provenance. It is an interesting relic from times past. This is a brass cartridge re-loader. It has a rectangular brass base with four brass columns supporting a rectangular top with a hollow middle. The columns of the casing are affixed with metal screws. Inside this protective casing are two cartridge-shaped brass pillars, one with a metal spike at the end and one with a small opening at the top. Both of these pillars are fixed to the base of the protective casing. Over-arching these two objects is a brass lever hinged at the end. This has a wooden handle The arm of the lever has a small protusion on the bottom which pushes into the opening of one of the pillars. Mechanics Institutes were first established in the 19th century in Scotland and England to improve the education of working class men and to instruct them in their various trades. In Australia Mechanics’ Institutes were set up in the late 1920s with the first one in Melbourne dating from 1839. The Institutes in Victoria were (and some still are) a feature of Victorian country towns, usually consisting of a hall containing a Library and in bigger centres art class rooms and other recreation areas. The Woodford Mechanics’ Institute was established in 1861, enlarged in 1868 and burnt down in 1917.This seal is of major interest as it is the only seal we have of Mechanics’ Institutes in our district. There is no specific information available on this watch and case. The watch was made by the American Watch Company which operated from 1850 to 1957. Small cases were often used to carry a watch in the 19th and early 20th century while a person was travelling, although wooden ones do not seem to have been common. The owner of watch, ‘A.U.’ has not been identified. Until the provenance of this item is established it remains an interesting object from the past and one suitable for display. This is a wooden case embossed on the front with a flower motif. It has a hinged lid with a space hollowed out inside to hold a pocket watch. This area has been lined with felt. The case contains an American silver watch which has a highly decorated cover. The watch face has Roman numerals with a smaller seconds dial. This wooden tray has been purchased from the Warrnambool Fancy Goods shop of M. Giblett. She had taken over this shop early in the 20th century from Mrs Martha Wright who was well-known in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for her shop in Liebig Street (95 Liebig Street today) and for her needlework classes in the town. Many of her pupils won prizes at the local Agricultural Shows. This tray is of some interest as an object bought at the Wright/Giblett Fancy Goods Store in Warrnambool early in the 20th century. This is a rectangular-shaped wooden tray with four raised pieces of wood attached to form edges. The tray has been painted yellow. There is a label on the base of the tray indicating the shop from where it was purchased. This wooden boomerang has been made to promote the Boomerang Club in Warrnambool and to use as a decoration at the Boomerang Club functions. The Warrnambool Boomerang Club was a social club formed in 1934 and it continued until at least 1953. The club had over 200 members enrolled by the late 1930s. The club organized regular activities, including monthly dances, an Annual Ball, Christmas parties, picnics and dinners. Profits from the activities were donated to local charities with over £600 being donated in 1946. This boomerang is of interest as a memento of the Boomerang Club, a social club in Warrnambool in the 1930s, 40s and 50s. It would have been a common item in a household in the 20th century and was often an heirloom passed down from grandparents. This is a black wooden clock with a rectangular base with ornamental metal corner pieces and two ornamental gilt metal patterns. There were many different musical bands in existence throughout the 20th century in Warrnambool, from Warrnambool City Band to Pipes and Drums as well as trumpet, mouth organ, and military bands. They officiated at many social events and parades and celebrations which were held at the time. The Camperdown Chronicle lists the Dennis King Banjo and Mandolin band as performing at such events around the 1950’s. This clock is believed to have come from the Warrnambool Railway Station. The Railway commenced in 1890 and the station was opened in 1897. The clock was made by Wilson Brothers, a prominent manufacturing watch and clock- making business in Timor Street, Warrnambool in the second half of the 19th Century.This item is of considerable significance as an early Railway Clock in Warrnambool. This container of 11 boxes of safety matches would have been a common item in a household during the first half of the 20th century and would have been used for the safe lighting of lamps, candles, room heating (fires), bath heaters, cigarettes, pipes etc. Safety matches came into use in the first half of the 19th century and the safety aspects have been improved after that time. Safety matches are still used today - for instance, when camping or in times of power failure. These matches are of interest as an example of household items in common use in the past. These are eleven boxes of safety matches (one box missing) wrapped in a buff-coloured paper cover with a label in red, blue and white colours with printing and an image of a dark-haired woman set against a white flame. Each box contains about 60 matches with a label similar to the one on the outside packaging. The matches are wooden with pink tips. The boxes have a rough surface on the side acting as a striking mechanism. This dressmaker's model has been made by a New York firm (1971 model) and comes from the Fletcher Jones Factory in Warrnambool. It would have been used for making and displaying ladies' clothing made at the factory. David Fletcher Jones (1895-1977) served in World War One and in the 1920s set up as a travelling hawker selling drapery in Western Victoria. In 1924 he opened a men's wear shop in Warrnambool and manufactured in sute. In 1946 a Fletcher Jones shop opened in melbourne and in 1948 a factory was established in Warrnambool with a new company, Fletcher Jones and Staff begun in 1951. The company initially specialized in men's trousers but later expanded into both men's and women's clothing. These thread spools come from the Fletcher Jones Factory in Warrnambool. They would have been used in the sewing and manufacture of the men's and ladies' garments made at the factory. The Fletcher Jones factory was established by David Fletcher Jones in 1948. David Fletcher Jones (1895-1977) set up as a travelling hawker selling drapery in the Western District in the 1920s. In the same decade he opened a shop in Warrnambool manufacturing men's clothing, specialising in the production of men's trousers. In 1946 a Fletcher Jones shop was opened in Melbourne and a company, Fletcher Jones and Staff, was established in 1951. The company expanded to manufacturing both men's and women's clothing, opening outlets in all States and becoming well-known Australia-wide. The stand may have been fitted on to the head by the Melbourne firm Ramie Specialty Co. This is a framed photograph showing a key event in Warrnambool's history - the proclamation by Sir Arthur Stanley of Warrnambool as a city in 1918. Warrnambool was the fifth non--metropolitan town in Victoria to be declared a city and a large crowd gathered outside the Town Hall to see this event. Sir Arthur Stanley (Lord Stanley of Alderley) was an English nobleman, Parliamentarian and soldier who was the Governor of Victoria from 1914 to 1920. The photographer was Arthur Jordan who, like his father Joseph, was a prominent photographer in Warrnambool at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries and took many official photographs of civic affairs. The donor of the photograph, probably immediately after the event to the Warrnambool Museum at the time under the auspices of the Warnambool Mechanics' Institute, was George Mackay, a prominent Warrnambool lawyer, Councillor and Mayor. This is the MINJAH telephone exchange testing unit. The exchange was adjacent to the property of MINJAH which is situated near Hawkesdale in Western Victoria. The exchange operated between 1955 and 1985. The testing unit was used for detecting and testing faults in the telephone system. The keys along the front were called "Hospital Keys" and were used to give subscribers a temporary connection in the event of a break down. This yoke would have been used as a harness for a bullock team . Bullocks were used extensively in the 19th and early 20th centuries for cartage and haulage, particularly for wool in the Western District. This yoke was from the property "Rose Park" in Willatook and used about 1902. The property of "Rose Park" was owned by Stan Baulch who inherited the property in 1919. Up to his death in 1980 he was an active member of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society and had a special interest in the local history of bullock teams and bullockies.This is retained as a memento of early farming practices in the Western District of Victoria.The yoke has a heavy wooden curved piece shaped at both ends with holes along the piece to hold two heavy metal rings which protrude through the wooden section and have pointed ends. These items come from the house "BIRCHWOOD" in Koroit Street, Warrnambool belonging to Dr. Angus and family. Dr. William Roy Angus (1901-1970) practised in Warrnambool from 1939 to 1970. In his later years Dr. Angus was an important ophthalmologist. He was prominent in Warrnambool in both medical and community affairs. This is a vintage lighting mechanism probably dating from the 1920s. It would have been used in a household or business to provide lighting for a room. This box contains typewriter equipment for a Remington typewriter. The Remington company was founded in U.S.A. and it produced the first typewriter for commercial use in 1873. In 1886 the Remington family business was sold but the name was retained and typewriters with the Remington Rand brand name were sold from 1927 on. Typewriters have now been replaced by computers. This box of equipment belonged to Dr Horace Holmes who would have used a typewriter in his medical practice in Warrnambool in the first half of the 20th century and perhaps would also have used a typewriter in the activities of the many community groups with which he was associated. Horace Iles Holmes (1877-1959) was born and educated in Tasmania and completed a medical degree at the University of Melbourne. He commenced a practice at Warrnambool in 1906 and was the honorary Medical Officer at the Warrnambool Hospital and Warrnambool’s Health Officer. His practice was at ‘Ierne’, at the corner of Spence and Kepler Streets. He was an early member of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons and was prominent in community affairs (foundation President of the Warrnambool Rotary Club, a member of the Warrnambool Masonic Lodge for over 50 years, a Warrnambool Hospital Committee member, a long-term Trustee of the Warrnambool Methodist Church and President of the Lyndoch Hostel for the Aged Committee. Dr Holmes also had agricultural interests and enjoyed fishing, bowls and golf. This box of typewriter equipment is of interest as an item in the collection of Horace Iles Holmes, a doctor who was prominently associated with the professional and community life of Warrnambool for over 50 years. This machine was used to sharpen men’s razors several decades ago and is thus a vintage item of historical interest. It belonged to a local Warrnambool man, Henry Cain. This item has local provenance and it is retained for this reason. Also it is an interesting memento of times past when men used razors and razor blades and needed some sort of sharpening or stropping device to keep the razors sharp. Today men mostly use disposable razors or electric razors. This is a silver-coloured oval-shaped metal object with a hinged lid and a catch.Inside the machine are two rotating brown leather pieces which form the sharpening aspect of the machine. A razor blade is inserted between the two rotating pieces.There is a turning handle on the outside of the machine and part of this folds back into the inside of the machine when the lid is closed. The handle has a wooden end. The machine is in a rectangular-shaped cardboard box. The base is white and the top is dark blue with an image of the machine on the top and the side and gold and white printing. One section of the top of the box is missing. Riding crops are used as a controlling mechanism by horse riders – to regulate the speed of the horse etc. This one was owned by J.C. Lumsden was a jockey in Warrnambool. JC Lumsden or John Calder Lumsden lived at 7 Nelson Street Warrnambool with his parents, father also JC Lumsden. John junior was an amateur jockey in 1950's and sixties and was also a distinguished show rider in "flag races"and the like, winning at local shows and the Melbourne Show. He was also a leading race horse trainer at Warrnambool. This item may well have been his fathers. Although we have no record of where this item came from the following information has recently been uncovered. It has a rounded wooden stick with interwoven material around one section and the remains of a string handle. The end of the stick has a leather tongue or keeper. There is a knob at the top end of the stick with a brass disc inserted with the name of the owner. This grain scale tester was used to work out the percentage weight of a sack of grain after the grain husk, dust and dirt were removed, thereby allowing for the calculation of the true value of the sack. The parts were attached to the box via the screw on top of the box and the cleaned grain went into the funnel to measure a fixed grain amount, before being released from the bottom of the funnel into the barrel which was then hung on the end of the scale. The weight was then slid down the graduated ruler until the scale balanced. Grain scale testers would have been used in farming in the Western District in the past and similar objects may still be in use. This candle holder was probably home made and hung in a kitchen where the candles would be accessible and lit from the wood stove or a fireplace. Candles for lighting would have been in widespread use in Warrnambool until the mid 1920s when electric lighting was introduced and would have been used for a couple of decades after this in areas out of towns and cities where there was no electric lighting. This item is retained as an example of a household item from the early 20th century. It will be useful for display and school visits.This is a rectangular-shaped wooden container with a fitted lid. The container has been painted white but is now peeling in places. The top of the container has an extra wooden piece at the top with a hole in the middle for attaching a cord or string to hang the item on a door or wall. The word ‘candles’ is incised into the side of the container. Inside the container (originally space for six candles) are the remains of three candles with one other candle almost intact and another one intact with a wick.
