Medal, Ballarat School of Mines Hillman Award (medal), c1992
Lindsay F.J. Hillman was born in Ballarat in 1910, and attended the Ballarat Junior Technical School. He became a cadet in Electrical Engineering Laboratory at the Ballarat School of Mines where he gained eventually gained a student Teachership for diploma studies at the School. Hillman was particularly active and excelled in a wide range of sporting interests and in student activities. In 1928 and 1928 he was awarded the Ballarat School of Mines Honour blazer by the Old Boys' association for all round athletic ability, leadership and scholarship. After spending two years with the Melbourne City Council Electric Supply Department gaining industrial experience Hillman was awarded his Diploma of electrical engineering in 1931, returning to the School in 1932 to teach apprentices and senior students. Hillman was appointed lecturer in Engineering Design and Graphics in 1937, lecturer in Engineering Design and Civil Engineering in 1944, Lecturer-in-Charge of Mechanical and Civil Engineering in 1948 and Head of the Electrical Engineering Department in 1949, a position he held until his retirement in 1973. In 1975 Lindsay Hillman was appointed to the Council of the Ballarat School of Mines and played an active role in school affairs.As Vice-President of Council from 1981 until his death in 1991 Hillman took a leading part in the implementation of many of the major building projects on the Lydiard Street Campus. The L.F.J. Hillman Award was established by the Ballarat School of Mines Council in conjunction with and through the generosity of the Hillman family in honour of the late Lindsay Frederick John Hillman. The bronze medal was presented annually to an enrolled student in an accredited course in the field of electrical/electronics studies at the Ballarat School of Mines. specific Criteria for the Award consisted of a balance of academic performance, leadership qualities, commitment to further study and involvement in sporting and/or community groups. Bronze medal designed depicting the portrait of Lindsay Hillman. The medal has a copper finish, and is presented in a blue hinged box. The first Hillman Award was presented in 1992. Yields information about the accident that involved a tram hitting a tree after being derailed and amount of damage done at the time.Black and white photographic reproduction print of a photograph that appeared in The Age Newspaper on 3/12/1941 of an accident involving Ballarat Tram No. 24 running away following a collision in Drummond St. South and hitting a tree at the corner of Dana St. on 2/12/1941. Photograph has the heading and caption. Made in March 2000 by the State Library of Victoria from a copy of the newspaper held in their collection. A similar photograph also appeared in the Courier. The Age copy was in better condition. Hi Res scan added 25/3/2011. Yields information a tram that was decorated for the 1938 centenary celebrations of the State of Victoria. Refer to pages 70 & 71 of "The Golden City and its Tramways" for these photographs and others in use and notes. The hand colour and then photographic reproduction adds to the significance of this print.Colour print of an original black and white photo print that has been hand coloured for reproduction of Ballarat (SEC 1st) No. 23, decorated for the centenary of settlement in the Ballarat district in 1938. Tram has female students on board, with conductor alighting. Shows track brakes on the tramcar. Tram has been coloured with pink and green colours, including the conductors uniform and the trees behind the tram. Twenty four page book including card covers on glossy paper titled "The Essendon Tramways" written by Jack Richardson, published by Traction Publications, Historical Series No. 153 in 1963. The story of the North Melbourne and Electric Tramway and Lighting Company. Note on page 3, advises that this book was the 2nd edition. This photograph shows the Battery Goldmine at Club Terrace from 1896 - 1905. Gold was found at Club Terrace in 1896. One of the best finds at Club Terrace was the 'Ace of Clubs' mine which was later sold to the Mallina Gold Mining Company. Syd Cadwallader was appointed manager of the company. The gold was smelted and brought to Orbost on horseback. The only protection against thieves was a revolver and riding crop, which the manager always carried. The 'Ace of Clubs' was eventually closed as the company was unable to cope with the rising water problem. In 2010, the Government announced that the ETV fleet would be no longer be funded by the MCA from September 2011, saving £32.5m over the Spending Review period. The Department stated that "state provision of ETVs does not represent a correct use of taxpayers money and that ship salvage should be a commercial matter between a ship's operator and the salvor".Two days after the announcement that the fleet was to be disbanded, Anglian Prince was sent to the aid of the UK's newest and largest nuclear submarine HMS Astute, which ran aground off the Isle of Skye in Scotland during sea trials.Builder's plaque, Imai Mfg Co, for the 'Jaramac 48' - Text is impressed into the front and painted red. The watercourse passes under the road and railway at this point. Significant flash flooding occurred along this water course on Christmas Day 2011 causing significant damage to the railway line and road and flooding of Judge Book Village. The drain was swept away including the support pillars of the rail lines timber framework. Judge Book Village had some 40 units flooded before the water entered Diamond Creek. The water had flowed down and flooded Valonia Drive then Grove Street before flowing down the watercourse to Main RoadIn February 1968 an unknown person took a series of photos from the Eltham Hotel at Pitt Street heading north along Main Road through the shopping centre to just north of Elsa Court covering the length of the section of Main Road which was duplicated shortly thereafter. Shows the condition and environment of the streesscape of Main Road, Eltham immediately prior to the duplication between Pitt Street and Elsa Court through the shopping centre. This photograph is of the Burdun Pan where small quantities of quartz material can be crushed. The Pan revolves and the large manganese iron ball does the crushing. This is one of a series of photographs of the Rutherglen Gold Battery. The battery's purpose was to crush quartz from nearby quartz reefs and extract gold from within. The battery was erected in 1908 and consists of a five-head battery, Wilfrey table, Bergin pan, portable steam engine and shed. Souvenir - Photographs: Central Deborah Mine
The Central Deborah Mine closed it's mining operations in 1954. The complete nature of the site encouraged the Bendigo City Council to purchase the site in 1970 in order that it be preserved. In 1971 the Bendigo Trust was formed and under its auspices the surface was opened to tourists in 1971' Extensive work enabled Level 2, underground to be opened to the public. This was followed in 1998 by Underground Level 3 Adventure tours. Accessory - Field Notebook Holder
Field notebook holders were not part of kit issue. This holder would have been purchased at a military store for the purpose of carrying personal documentation on the person. Major Damien Batty served in Afghanistan in 2011-2012 with the Bravo Commando Company Group, 2nd Commando Regiment in Uruzgan. The Commandos took part in 20 rotations with the Special Operations Task Group (SOTG) between 2007 and 2012. During this time they undertook significant combat operations, and were awarded for its actions, the regiment was collectively awarded the Unit Citation for Gallantry and the Meritorious Unit Citation.Field notebook holder in Disruptive Pattern Camouflage Uniform (DPCU) fabric with three compartments belonging to Major Damien Batty whilst serving with the United Nations in Afghanistan. Appears to be a Victorian Railways platform seat dated possibly from 1925 onwards when Victorian Railways assumed management of the Chalet. 4 other slatted bench seats are sited in the the games room which was built in 1925. Cottage of Edward Toohey (died 1898) a Shire contractor and road maker. Ned, his son worked with Frederick Myers building many of the bluestone roads in the Shire of Melton. In the background is the brick house built for Martha Myers in 1967. Martha and husband Frederick (born 1877 in Melton) resided in the Myers (Miers) house on Western Highway beside the gully near Reserve road. Frederick lived there for 86 years. The house was built in 1867 by Henri and Ann nee Dowling Myers. Demolished 1968. Martha Myers house was demolished in 2011 to become a car park. 'There are also a number of framed portraits, including those of...Dr. John Wilkinson, a doctor who started a practise in Bright in the late 1880's and helped develop the tourist potential of the Mount Buffalo Plateau. " (Pg 84, Historica, 2011) Dr John .F. Wilkinson was a significant figure in the pioneering of tourism at Mt Buffalo. A Doctor and resident of Bright, he and W.A. Staker were the founder members of the Bright Alpine Club formed in 1887 to promote the natural attractions of the Buffalo plateau. " They form the Alpine Club and charge a membership fee for guiding people up the mountain (led by official guides Bill Weston and Edward Carlisle). this is matched by a grant from the local shire council.... They advertise in the Argus and promote the Australian Alps, Bright district as "The Switzerland of Victoria'. Mt Buffalo, with the railways nearby, is the most accessible snowfield and becomes 'the cradle of skiing in Victoria'." (Pg 179 Historica . 2011) The initial funds raised by the Alpine club funded the Staker's walking track, the first easily accessible route up the mountain. . They engaged the services of early Victorian photographer Nicholas Caire, whose scenic photographs helped to promote the beauty of the mountain. The efforts of these gentlemen culminated in securing 2.800 acres for the one of the first National Parks in Victoria, 1898. Listed in Draft Inventory of significant Items. Framed sepia photograph. Newspaper cutting from The Courier, Ballarat, Monday Sept. 28, 1992, page 3 of the celebration of the Museum by operating trams along the shore of Lake Wendouree for almost 17 hours to mark the 21st anniversary of the closure of the Ballarat system. Includes a photo of a group of members sanding on the front of Horse Tram No. 1 - Len Millar, Frank Puls, David O' Neil, Alastair Reither, Colleen Low, John Phillips, Andrew Mitchell and Richard Gilbert. Includes comments by Richard Gilbert on the Museum, its Collection Policy and the winners of the colour competition including details of the prizes. Black and white photograph of SEC No. 28 and 32 at the intersection of Drummond and Sturt Sts. Tram 28 has destination of Mt Pleasant, coming from Drummond St. south, and carrying "Trotting Bray Raceway Thursday" auxiliary sign board on front of tram. Tram 32 has been decorated for Myers as a Santa or Christmas tram, and is outbound to Gardens via Sturt. St. Pole sign by Holden car has a Olympic rings sign on it, indicating location of Lake Wendouree and once was a tram stop sign. Taken on 23-12-1967. High Res Images added 5/3/2011. Shows the details of buildings in the east end of Sturt St, c1916.Digital image from a postcard from the collection of David Critchley, of Ballarat, Sturt St c1916. This 'birds eye' view of Sturt St reveals on of the early fleet standing at the city terminus probably during the Great War. Note the absence of motor cars and women's skirts are somewhat shorter - an economy concession with the shortage of cloth during the war years. A Valentines photo postcard. David scanned this pic at a higher resolution than normal, so you should be able to zoom in on the tram, which has been fitted with windshields and looks typically well used and unloved as did most of the original Ballarat fleet in their latter years.
