This slide documents a return trip in May 1960 of one of the original hikers Hazel Scambler (nee Elderfield) now married to another of the hikers (Gordon Elderfield). The couple have a young daughter Raelle who is in the photograph holding her mother's hand. This cream can was used to store cream at the Paradise Hotel in Clematics, which could then be sent to a butter factory with the can returning to the owners. Before 1921, Clematis was named Paradise; as this can is labelled Clematis, it almost certainly came from after 1921, likely in the 1920s when Catherine O'Connor was registered as the owner and ran the hotel alongside her sisters Janet and Minnie (possibly the 'M' in "M. O'Connor"). The hotel is still operating today, having been run by the O'Connors into the 1950s and by a succession of different owners since.This is an artifact known to originate from the highly locally significant Paradise Hotel. A rusted metal cyllindrical container, with two handles attached near the top. The interior is somewhat less rusted than the exterior. No lid is present. The container appears to be welded together, with some bolts at the concave base. There is a metal label attached to the side, with embossed text.Embossed Label: "M. Banool Tea Garden was a popular tourist location at what is now 1 Ogilvy Road, Emerald. It was operated by Alfred and Madge Hart. Further research is needed into its chronology; this photograph is from 1947. While the Tea Garden could have been opened much earlier with the early 20th century tourist boom, archival and primary mentions of the Tea Garden are all from or after the 1940s; conversely, Banool does not appear in the 1920s tourist guides consulted. This indicates it may be more likely that the Tea Garden opened in the postwar economic boom.Banool Tea Garden was a popular but not often discussed destination, important in the region's tourist history.This item is a portrait sepia photograph depicting a sign for the Banool Tea Garden. The sign's structure is wooden, supported by four legs forming a triangular prism; a wooden crossbar above the sign extends beyond the sign itself. The Banool logo is in cursive overlapping with a circle, while the other words are in more typical capital fonts. The reverse has an accession number handwritten in pencil, and handwritten annotations in blue pen on stickers affixed to the reverse. It also has logos for Kodak Print and Velox. The NQRs were the standard Medium open goods wagon. Generally the sides and ends were removable thus providing a totally flat truck. Three long drop-down doors formed the sides thus allowing easy loading and unloading. 218 of these goods vehicles were built between 1898 and 1914 ? numbered 1 - 218​. Originally, these wagons carried the code letter R​ as they were built with sides and ends. They later had the R removed. Unlike the Broad Gauge, VR's 2 ft 6 in (762 mm) narrow gauge network never had four-wheeled wagons (aside from a handful of trolleys). Because of this, a single design of open wagon emerged and this was the only type of wagon ever used on these lines. This was the NQR class, a wagon with the same length and loading capacity as a Broad Gauge four-wheeled open wagon to make transferring freight between the gauges easier. The wagons, numbered 1 through 218, were built between 1898 and 1914. The wagons used the same underframe as most other non-locomotives on the VR Narrow Gauge. Letters and numbers were originally painted only on the end bulkheads and doors, both of which could be removed as traffic dictated, and this made wagon identification difficult until the decals were transferred to the underframes of each wagon In the 1910s some NQRs were provided with removable wood and steel frameworks with canvas roof canopies and side curtains, and internal seating to supplement the rest of the passenger stock during busy holiday periods. Puffing Billy has re-created these for emergency capacity. Five more NQRs, numbered 219-223​, were built between 1990 and 1992 initially for passenger use so were fitted with the removable frames In the 1960s the Puffing Billy Railway added grids in the floor of some to enable them to be used to drop ballast on the track where needed.
