The photograph shows Ballarat tram 26 in Sturt Street just down from Lydiard Street. Photo taken in January 1971 by Campbell Duncan. The buildings on the corner are the Commonwealth Bank and Allen's Music. This tram was built in 1916 by Duncan and Fraser for the Hawthorn Tramways Trust where it was No.5. In 1920 it was reclassified by Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board and numbered 111. Sold to the Electric Supply Co. of Victoria in 1930 and became No. 26. It then passed to the SEC in 1934. Became part of the Ballarat Tramway Preservation Society. Prepared by McCarty Underwood & Co. Consulting Engineers 31 Queen St Melbourne. Document originally printed for the first contract for tramcar bodies. This document has been changed as a result of negotiations by Duncan and Fraser and the HTT, which have been initially by both parties. Contains completed tender forms, prices and some minor initialled alterations to the tender. The document is the HTT or Trusts copy of the tender and it has been signed by Duncan and Fraser and the HTT and on the rear sheet has the seal of the Trust. Gives prices and dates for delivery of 8 bogie and 7 combination (4 wheel) tramcar bodies. .2 - letter - typed on quarto paper - two sheets - from Duncan & Fraser dated 10/7/1916 advising of changes in materials and equipment that was being offered, partly due to availability due to World War 1. Duncan and Fraser tramcar No 3 at the depot bedecked with large Australian flags and small Red Cross flags and seeking donations to the Red Cross. Photograph shows Hawthorn Tramways Trust bogie Tram 15 at Glenferrie and Riversdale Roads 1916-1920. The tram body was built by Duncan and Fraser of Adelaide and entered service during April 1916. It was renumbered N class 121 by the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board following the absorption of the Trusts by the MMTB in 1920. The tram is eastbound in Riversdale Road. The tracks of the Prahran and Malvern Tramway Trust can be seen in front of the tram. The conductor has alighted from the tram and walked forward to check for trams on Glenferrie Road. A Fire Brigade street fire alarm can be seen on the corner. The existing connecting curves at the corner were installed in 1925. The tramcar had a number of significant accidents and was disposed of in March 1938. Understood from the donor, that the house on the corner was known as "Pax" and demolished when commercial development of the corner occurred. The donor's family operated the Purvis Real Estate on the southeast corner from the building now known as Stotts Corner. Letter enclosed the deposit receipt. .4 - Receipt on pre-printed receipt paper with a South Australian Government duty stamped impressed into the paper on the right hand edge, with an adhesive strip on the rear of the left hand side. The postcard photograph shows PMTT No. 23 a Maximum Traction bogie, straight sill combination with drop end at the Malvern Burke Road terminus, c1916. See page 60 of Destination City 5th edition for details of the tram. Purchased by the Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust, sold to the Hawthorn Tramways Trust during 1916, in 1920 absorbed by the MMTB and classed "O". They were sold to Adelaide in 1927. There is a large "1" in the front window, indicating the route number and the destination of Burke Road.
