This photograph was taken on the occasion of the wedding of Frances Ayers to Norman Nobelius, grandson of Carl Axel Nobelius who founded the Gembrook Nurseries. The wedding took place at St Mark's Church, Emerald on 25 September 1948 followed by a reception at New Cafe, Emerald. This pair of railway safety glasses belonged to Aurthur Ayers 1887-1964. Arthur and his wife, Nina Ayers (Casement) lived in Avonsleigh 1929-1964. He had served in the first AIF in World War I and was wounded at Passchendaele in 1917. These glasses were passed on to his daughter Frances Ayers who later married the grandson of Carl Axel Nobelius.These safety glasses belonged to a veteran of World War I who, with his family, spent most of the rest of his life in Avonsleigh and became related to the Nobelius family by his daughter's marriage. Carl Axel Nobelius (1851-1921) was born in Finland of Swedish parents. He migrated to Australia in 1870 and became a paramount plant nursery proprietor, operating extensive nurseries in Emerald,. Victoria and in Tasmania. His property in Emerald now constitutes Emerald Park. The bust was on display in Emerald Museum but is now lost.The bust provides a clear likeness of one of Emerald's most significant personages. This needle case belonged to Nina Ayers (nee Casement) 1891-1972. She was taught sewing by her aunt, Blanche Casement, with whom Nina lived after her mother died when she was seven. NIna and her husband, Arthur Ayers 1887-1964 lived in Avonsleigh 1929-1964. Nina, in turn, gave this needle case to her daughter Frances Ayers who later married the grandson of Carl Axel Nobelius.This needle case belonged to a local woman whose daughter was related by marriage to the Nobelius family, and it tells a story of sewing skills passed from mother to daughter.Attractive small needle case with red background and red and gold lettering. At one end is a small hole for dispensing needles and a top able to be swivelled to the correct needle compartment. Inside the case are five compartments for dispensing five different needle sizes. This pair of Lorgnette spectacles belonged to Nina Ayers (nee Casement) 1891-1972. She lived with her aunt, Blanche Casement (nee Balnarry) as a child after her mother died when Nina was seven. Her aunt would often take Nina to the theatre where these spectacles may have been used. This mantle clock was given to Norman Nobelius by his parents Rupert and Flo Nobelius on the occasion of his marriage to Frances Ayers in 1947 and was subsequently inherited by their daughter, Pauline. Rupert was the son of Carl Axel Nobelius, the famous Emerald horticulturalist. Ruby Nobelius, who is also known as Ethel Ruby Nobelius Hayes, was born in 1887, dating the photograph to 1908. She is wearing an Edwardian style dress with a rounded, soft updo popularised by the 'Gibson Girl' aesthetic of the 1910s. Four years prior, Ruby was a bridesmaid in the wedding of her brother, Carl Oscar Nobelius, to Florence Prescott in 1904 at the age of 17. This image captures the fashion style of lifestyle of wealthier Australian women in the 1910s. It also displays the social significance placed on 21st birthdays in the 1900s. As she is dressed in a gown and photographed in a studio, it indicates a momentous occasion deemed important enough to commemorate and document. The poster belonged to an Emerald real estate agency which is no longer in operation. The donor of this sign had advised that the sign dates from the 1980s and has provided information about the proprietors at that time (who were not part of the Nobelius family). The agency was originally founded by Arch Nobelius, one of the sons of famous Emerald Nurseryman, Carl Axel Nobelius in 1922. Arch Nobelius sold it in 1946.The Nobelius Real Estate Agency is part of a broader historical narrative that includes the establishment of the Nobelius Nursery and the family's significant contributions to the development of Emerald. As stated in the postcard, Jack Nobelius, the infant in the photograph, is only 12 months old, dating the image to late 1914- early 1915, as Jack Nobelius was born on the 21st of December, 1913. Therefore, this postcard would have been written during the First World War, following Australian commitment to fight Germany as a dominion of Britain. Jack Nobelius was the son of Carl Oscar Nobelius and Florence Cathleen Nobelius (Prescott). He also had an older brother, Roland Nobelius.This postcard not only captures the early life of Jack Nobelius, but also provides insight into timelines on his life, the brief natures of postcards, their use as new years blessings, and the unique nature of Florence Nobelius' handwriting, featuring informal, somewhat rushed cursive script, with some errors in the writing. This pyjama case was produced in the 1930s by Joy-Toys, an Australian toy company founded in South Yarra in the early 1920s. It was gifted to Elaine Morris (then Nobelius - the granddaughter of Carl Axel Nobelius) at an early - perhaps 3rd - birthday. Elaine was born in 1934, so it would have been gifted around 1937. Several other Joy-Toys monkeys were made with hands and feet, which might either have fallen off or been removed over the past century or which may not have been included on this model. Some other models of Joy-Toys monkeys were based on the characters of British illustrator Lawson Wood, who used a wide cast of monkeys and other animals in his work. The zipper was made in Australia by Lightning, indicating that the monkey's components were also likely made locally.This pyjama case belonged to a member of the Nobelius family, and reflects a style of toymaking that today is far out of fashion from a distinctive company that is no longer in business.The monkey has a hollow body, with the interior lined with orange satin fabric and closed by a zipper. The shape of the monkey is filled out by the case's intended purpose - storing pyjamas. The head is stuffed, and features a face made of felt molded over buckram, with painted features in red (mouth and nostrils) and black (closed eyelids and eyelashes). Outside of the face, the monkey is covered in synthetic brown 'fur'. It is possible that the monkey once had hands and feet which have since been removed or lost. The monkey's limbs and tails are also stuffed and separated from the hollow body. The head and arms of the monkey are on joints allowing them to rotate 360 degrees. The monkey also has small furless fabric ears.
