Poor Quality Photo, but can identify as Grade 1&2. No year given. Porbably early 1890's according to Evlie Dobbin school register entry.

The residence was relocated from school number 2242 in Heatherdale Road (Mitcham) south of the railway line to this site in Ringwood Street opposite Charter Street where it adjoined the school when it opened at the corner of Maroondah Highway in 1889. For Rear View of the residence see record 6855

Photograph of Foundation stone for Ringwood State School No. 2997 was laid by Mrs. J.K. Turnbull on 15th August, 1889, marking the opening of the school situated in Whitehorse Road at the corner of Ringwood Street (1889-1922). Mrs. Turnbull was the wife of the Ringwood Station Master. The stone was removed after the school closed in 1922 and re-laid in 1962 by the School Committee at this subsequent Greenwood Avenue school site and is pictured here being viewed near the entrance in 1973 by Mr. Ron Pullin, Archivist, Ringwood Historical Research Group".

Sign below photograph reads, "Foundation stone of Ringwood State School (late Ringwood St.). Now in grounds of Greenwood Avenue Ringwood State School". Inscription on stone, "This foundation stone was laid by Mrs. J.K. Turnbull on 15th August 1889". Printed on plaque below stone, "No.2997 - Ringwood State School 1889-1922. Situated in Ringwood Street, East Side sixty yards north of Maroondah Highway. Foundation stone removed 19?? re-erected by the School Committee 1962".

Red covered scrap book with photos, - this is the original compiled by headmaster Mr J.A. Baines as a history of Ringwood Primary School No.2997 retained at the school until donated to Ringwood Historical Society. A second less comprehensive copy was bound and also presented to Ringwood Historical Society (this is catalogued as VC4691). Both contain detailed school histories, class and school photographs, lists of headmasters, pupil recollections.

Red covered scrap book compiled by headmaster Mr J.A. Baines as a history of Ringwood Primary School No.2997. This is a slightly abridged copy of the original (See VC 4692). It was presented to Ringwood Historical Research Group by the Headmaster Mr J.A. Baines on 6 June 1969, "whose members helped greatly in gathering material, identification of persons in photographs, etc, especially Mrs Pullin (President)." From the South Bourke and Mornington Journal: April 18, 1888. "A meeting was held at the Ringwood Hall on Saturday evening to protest against the action of the Education Department in delaying the erection of the State School, and in hiring the local hall for school purposes without first consulting the Board of Advice. The various speakers strongly condemned the action of the Government, not only with regard to the State School but their neglect to provide proper police protection and a lock-up and to establish a Court of Petty Sessions. A deputation was appointed to lay before the Minister concerned the views of the Meeting."

Ringwood School Committee – Shelter Pavilion Tender (1922) A notice inviting tenders to build a shelter pavilion for the new Ringwood State School, outlining requirements and where plans could be inspected. 2. Ringwood School Committee – Removal of Wooden Shelters (1922) A second tender notice seeking buyers to purchase and remove two wooden shelter buildings from the school grounds. 3. Essay Competition (1922) A brief announcement about a natural history essay competition run by The Mail, noting that winning essays were published. 4. A Nice Present (1922) A short piece noting that Ringwood railway employees donated an eight day clock to the new school as it neared completion. 5. Two Newspaper clippings from 1924 discussing long‑standing complaints about the poor condition of the roads and footpaths leading to Ringwood State School in 1924. IN teh first article, Parents and the school committee argue that the council should improve the streets and footpaths so children can reach the school safely and “dry shod.” The committee believes the council has the authority to construct the roads and charge landowners, but only if the streets meet the required 50‑foot width. The article notes that significant money has already been spent on the school and that better roads would increase nearby property values. A key frustration is that the school was built “in the wrong place,” on or near private streets, complicating responsibility for upgrades. In the second clipping dated 11/7/2024, Mr. A. V. Greenwood raises the issue of gravelling the footpaths; The chairman responds that the league cannot act because the streets are privately owned. Mr. McClelland suggests involving the Education Department. Mr. Grant opposes spending ratepayer money on private streets. Attention is formally directed to the Education Department. Regarding Greenwood Avenue: Mr. Greenwood says streets south of the railway should be made. Mrs. Greenwood, owning most of the land, is willing to pay her share, but other owners must also contribute. No action is taken because responsibility lies with the landowners themselves. "The children reflected the greatest possible credit of their instructresses". The article has long lists of pupil names involved and the various items performed including singing, recitals, dancing, a "troop drill by the girls of Grades 1 and 2", a "rod drill by the boys of Grades 1 and 2", perfomance of "The Swineherd" and "Fairy Chain" playlets etc.

Mrs Bryant (President), Mrs Matlock (Secretary) and Mrs N. Cooper (treasurer) presided. The article includes description of outfits, room decorations, offical table guests including the Mayor and Mayoress (cr. and Mrs Blood). Birthday cake was cut by Mrs Bryant. Cr. James Murray was fined 25/-, with 6/- costs, for allowing five head of cattle to wander. LOCAL AND GENERAL The mayoress of Ringwood (Mrs. A. Temple Miles) and her elder son Edward returned on Saturday from an extended holiday in Tasmania, the birthplace of the mayoress.
