Summary:
Around 150 people attended a public meeting to support the preservation of the historic 1922 red-brick building at Ringwood Primary School. The school had recently been merged with Heathmont Primary School and Southwood Primary School to form the new Great Ryrie Primary School, due to open later that year. The meeting, chaired by Cr Nick Kirmos, strongly opposed the demolition of the historic school building, with Kirmos describing its potential loss as “a crying shame” and arguing that its age and history made it worthy of preservation.
Cr Nick Kirmos said the building was an important symbol of childhood memories for generations of Ringwood residents and that its destruction would mean the loss of part of the community’s heritage. The meeting also called for the former Southwood and Heathmont school sites to be retained as open space. A group of residents planned to meet with Education Minister Phil Gude to discuss the issue. The article notes that Tintern Anglican Girls Grammar School had expressed interest in using the Southwood site as a junior boys’ campus, while Bayswater MP Gordon Ashley had previously stated that the Ringwood and Heathmont sites could potentially be sold for housing, although no decision had been made. The meeting also passed a motion asking the Education Department to fund any future footpaths needed near the new Great Ryrie Primary School.
